Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction is a procedure done after mastectomy or lumpectomy (removal of breast tissue) because of tissue injury, congenital deformities or disease such as cancer.

The goal of reconstruction is to restore one or both breasts to near normal shape, appearance, symmetry, and size.

Breast reconstruction often involves multiple procedures performed in stages and can either begin at the time of mastectomy or be delayed until a later date.

A candidate for reconstruction should always consult with her surgeon, her oncologist or radiation therapist, and her plastic/reconstructive surgeon to formulate a sensible timeline for treatment and healing.

A federal law, called The Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act (WHCRA), was enacted to require most group insurance plans that cover mastectomies to also cover breast reconstruction.

Dr. Frazier would be happy to consult with patients and their caregivers about breast reconstruction to formulate together a comfortable plan for healing.
